What import duty and VAT apply to door handles shipped to Brazil?

Brazil is worth entering, but price it properly, because the tax cascades. Imported architectural hardware carries the Imposto de Importação at the Mercosur Common External Tariff rate for your NCM code, then IPI on the CIF-plus-II base, then PIS and COFINS-Importação, then state ICMS at 17% to 22% depending on the state and calculated por dentro, which grosses the base up rather than sitting on top. Add the SISCOMEX fee and, on sea freight, the AFRMM. Stacked, taxes commonly land near 79% of the goods value at the border — a registered importer can credit IPI, PIS/COFINS and ICMS afterwards, but the full amount is fronted in cash at clearance. Two levers actually help: the India-Mercosur Preferential Trade Agreement, in force since 2009, carries preference margins on roughly 450 tariff lines — margins off the MFN rate, not a cut to zero — so check your NCM against the list; and Ex-Tarifário can beat it outright where no Brazilian equivalent of the product exists.
